Backdating housing benefit claims

We can treat your claim as if you had sent it to us up to 3 months earlier than the date that you make your claim.

For benefit to be considered for this period: If you are of working age and you want us to consider backdating your claim, please request this when you make your claim for Housing Benefit online.

Housing Benefit can be backdated for a maximum of 1 month if you are of working age.

If you are of pension age you do not need to make a request for backdating.

Alternatively, you can make a request in writing or by email using the details below.

If there has been a good reason why you could not complete or get your form to us sooner, then you can ask for your claim to be 'backdated' to an earlier date.

This applies to all backdating requests made on or after 1 April 2016.

Housing Benefit cannot be backdated for more than one month if the claimant makes their request on or after 1 April 2016 even if this is a belated request linked to a current claim.

In some circumstances, we may be able to pay Housing Benefit for an earlier date than the date of your claim form. Backdating is sometimes possible, but there are only limited circumstances, so it is best to make your claim for housing benefit as soon as possible.

The rules about when we can pay a backdate are different for people who are working age and people who have reached pension age.
